How to Calculate Cement, Sand and Aggregate Quantity in Concrete

Concrete Quantity

Some Constant Values to be Considered before Estimating concrete quantity

Density of Cement        – 1440 kg/m3

Density of Sand              – 1450-1500 kg/m3

Density of Aggregate    – 1450-1550 kg/m3

Quantities Conversions

How many kg’s in 1 bag of cement                  – 50kg

Each bag of cement in cubic meters              – 0.0347 cubic meter

How to calculate concrete materials quantity

Concrete consists of four main ingredients/materials as cement, sand ,aggregate and water.

For volumetric calculation, let’s consider length, width and height.

Assuming we need 5 m3 of concrete for M20(1:1.5:3) concrete mix.

Sum of concrete parts = 1 + 1.5 + 3= 5.5 parts

Now let’s find individual materials quantities,

Cement Quantity – (Cement parts / Sum of Concrete parts) x Concrete Volume

                                  -(1/5.5) x 5 = 0.9090m3

Density of Cement = 1440 kg/ m3 = 0.9090 X 1440 = 1,308.96 kg = 26.17~27 bags.

Sand Quantity -(Sand parts / Sum of Concrete parts) x Concrete Volume

                            -(1.5/5.5) x 5 =1.3636m3

Coarse Aggregate Quantity-(Coarse Aggregate parts / Sum of Concrete parts) x Concrete Volume

                            -(3/5.5) x 5 =2.7272m3

Water Quantity – W/C Ratio x Cement Volume

Note – 0.45 is an assumed water cement ratio according to IS 10262 (2009)

                           – 0.45 x 0.9090 m3 = 0.40905 m3

Unit weights of water – 1000 liters/m3

                           – 0.40905 x 1000 = 409.05 liters

Therefore, For 5m3 of concrete we need 27 bags of cement, 1.3636m3 of sand, 2.7272m3 of coarse aggregate and 409.05 liters of water.
